Title: Subject to Change

Synopsis: Joey made her dad a deathbed promise that she would become a doctor, and dedicate herself to fighting the very cancer that took his life. There’s just one problem -three years into her pre-med classes, she's struggling to stay on top of the curve, let alone prove she's dazzling enough to earn a spot in an Ivy League medical school. In a Hail Mary move, she throws a basic Business 101 class into her semester schedule, banking on a perfect score to boost her GPA.

That is, until she’s paired for a final project with Hawk, the bartending, motorbike-riding, gorgeously bedheaded loser who falls asleep in class and communicates in one-word sentences.

Hawk does whatever he wants, whenever he wants, which sets Joey on edge – in every possible way. As they get to know each other, her urge to scream at him is curbed only by her fantasies of tearing his clothes off. Soon those fantasies become reality, and Joey realizes Hawk makes her feel more fully herself than any of the rich boys her mother and sorority sisters approve of.

But the promise to her father hangs over her head, and the harder Joey tries to succeed in her chosen career, the faster everything falls into a hopeless tailspin of bad grades, broken promises and guilt. It doesn't help to have Hawk sitting like a devil on her shoulder, insisting she should be free to live however she wants to live - like he does.

The only thing Joey knows is that her neatly organized life is crushing her - and Hawk's bad attitude might be the only thing that can save her.

Review: 4 Stars - Author Alessandra Thomas, second title in the Picture Perfect Series – Subject to Change was another wonderful story with two amazing characters.

When I find an author that I love I want to read anything and everything they write as what happened here with Thomas. Her characters are emotional and dealing with issues as they struggle to navigate their way through college. Things from their past make them question the present and in turn their future. Thomas has a good grip on collage age 20 something’s that’s for sure and she also has some swoon worthy boys in that head of hers, yum!

Joey and Hawk are as different as they are the same. They meet in class and are forced to work together for a class project. Hawk is always late or just never shows up. Joey is early and worries about her grades. Neither know at first just how much things from their past that are holding them back. It takes some lessons learned and some soul searching for both, however since this title is written from Joey’s point of view, we only see her thought process and what she goes through with promises she made to her dad before he died.

Hawk, while we don’t get to see into his head, there’s parts throughout the book that we do see the changes in him from his interactions with Joey. They make the other think, heal and question what they thought they wanted, or how they wanted to achieve it.

The two have problems and go about such different ways to work through them. Hawk has two things he’d do anything for otherwise he does what he wants and his attitude shows it. Joey has her life just about scheduled down to the minute because of her pre-med studies. For me I was looking for the two to balance each other out after sorting through their own issues.

Thomas has written another a story that flows because of her characters and how they have many realistic qualities to them. She’s mixed all the ingredients in a “New Adult” contemporary title extremely well to create another book that I love and that makes me eager to read even more from her in the future. I can’t wait to see what she writes next and I have a feeling this is another author who’s going to quickly go far with her writing. I highly recommend this wonderful story, enjoy!

Title: Poison (Legacy, #2)
Author: Molly Cochran
Publisher: Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books,368 Pages (December 4th, 2012)
Add to: Goodreads
Order Online: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Indie Bound, The Book Depository

Synopsis: Arthurian legend mixes with modern-day witchcraft in this haunting sequel to Legacy, which Publishers Weekly said “should please the legions of paranormal fans looking for a sophisticated supernatural thriller.” After the riveting—and romantic—events of Legacy, Katy has won Peter’s heart and is now claiming her place in the magical world. Though half the students at her boarding school come from witching lines, the use of magic is expressly forbidden at Ainsworth, so as to keep the witching world hidden from the blue-blooded preppies, aka Muffies, who also walk the halls.

But the Muffies have at least a notion of magic, because Katy catches them staging a made-up ritual—and to her astonishment, the girls collapse at Katy’s feet and fall into comas. When Katy is blamed, she becomes desperate to clear her name and finds herself battling all odds to harness her growing magical powers in order to save the Muffies and dispel the Darkness once more.

Interview:

The Assembly

Katy Ainsworth, Peter Shaw (Katy’s boyfriend), Gram (Elizabeth Ainsworth, Katy’s great-grandmother), Agnes (Katy’s Aunt Agnes Ainsworth), Hattie Scott (Katy’s employer, a cook), Ola’ea (Hattie’s ancestress—1690-1788), and Miss P (assistant headmistress at the school Katy and Peter attend)

Katy: Well, hi there, ladies and gentlemen! Today my fellow characters and I are gathered together for a very special interview with our esteemed creator, Molly Cochran, author of Legacy and Poison, who has graciously agreed to give us all bigger parts in her next book!
MC: Um, that’s not exactly—
Katy: Thanks, Mol. What’s your favorite song, Peter?
Peter: Huh?
MC: Everlasting Love, by the Black Keys.
Katy: It is not! It’s I Will Always Love You, by Whitney Houston!
Peter: As if.
MC: That’s your favorite song, Katy. You dance to it in Poison.
Katy: So does Peter! We dance together! And . . . and . . .
Agnes: (clearing throat) Do tell us about the next book, Ms. Cochran. The one after Poison.
MC: Really? You’d like to know about that?
Hattie: (hands on hips) Mmm. How big is my part?
Ola’ea: And mine! I wasn’t even in Poison.
Agnes: That’s because you’re dead.
Ola’ea: Who you calling dead, you skinny beyatch?
Peter: But you are dead, Ola’ea. You died in 1788, at the age of ninety eight.
Katy: Peter’s so smart. If you were a tree, Peter, what would you be?
MC: (ignoring her) The next book, which I’m calling Seduction at the moment, takes place in Paris.
Miss P: Alors, j’adore Paris, moi!
MC: You’re not in it.
Miss P: Not at all?
Katy: What’s your favorite color, Peter? Is it green, like my eyes? If you were a flower—
Peter: I think you’re supposed to be interviewing Molly. Er, Ms. Cochran. Her.
Katy: Oh. Okay, what kind of tree would you be, Mols?
MC: I have no idea. What an annoying question. Anyway, there are a number of new characters in Seduction, among them a coven of beautiful witches who all want to take Peter away from Katy—
Katy: What!
MC: —and a gorgeous rock guitarist millionaire who falls in love with Katy—
Peter: What!
Gram: What!
Hattie: What!
Agnes: What!
Miss P: What!
MC: —while Peter finally discovers a magical ability in himself that guarantees great wealth for the rest of his life.
Peter: (grinning) Cool.
Ola’ea: And then a beautiful ghost comes, and—
MC: No. No ghosts.
Peter: But that’s a whole book away. We were talking about Poison. I don’t think I have a big enough part in Poison.
MC: What are you talking about? You save everyone.
Katy: And you almost die for me.
Peter: I do die for you, Katy. In case you didn’t notice.
Ola’ea: Oh, are you dead, too? (bats eyelashes)
Katy: Well, I get attacked by rats.
Gram: Gracious. I think I’d rather be dead.
Ola’ea: No, you wouldn’t.
Katy: Okay, now I’m serious. You, big creator lady . . . Why do you make things so hard for us?
MC: In Poison, you were betrayed by a friend. That’s always hard.
Katy: You filled me with poison.
MC: That’s how betrayal feels.
Katy: You left me with nothing.
MC: That’s not true. I left you with everything that matters—love, family, courage . . . and a bit of hard-won wisdom.
Hattie: Hmmph. Personally, I’d rather have what you gave Peter.
Gram: Right. Money. Gelt. Moolah. Gimme.
Katy: Gram!
Miss P: J’adore l’argent, moi.
Ola’ea: I just wish I were alive.
Katy: Yeah. Some creator you turned out to be, Molly C. Can’t even give us what we want.
MC: I’m sorry. I guess I can’t please you all. But I didn't write my books to please you. I wrote them because I wanted to make your world real. I wanted to feel your magic, if only for the time it took me to invent it. And when I’m done writing about you, I’ll miss you more than I can say.
Peter: You’ll miss us? Hey, we’ll be the ones with no life.
Gram: What are you young people talking about? Sounds like Greek to me.
Agnes: He’s talking about us. When the author stops writing what we’re doing, we stop doing it.
Hattie: You mean we just, like, freeze?
MC: Yes. You freeze. You never age. You never move past the point of the last page.
Katy: Getting scared here.
MC: Me, too. It’s always painful to finish a book. Even though it’s a relief, it hurts.
Katy: (lips trembling) So this is goodbye?
MC: (softly) Yes. Goodbye my children, created from my own joy and sorrow, from my questions and fear and moments of blessedness. Goodbye, until I write you again. Goodbye, goodbye . . .

Title: Precious Things
Author: Stephanie Parent
Publisher: 200 Pages (June 4th, 2013)
Add to: Goodreads
Order here: Amazon, Barnes and Noble

NOTE: This is a "New Adult" novel. Due to mature content this title is recommended for ages 17+
Synopsis: Isabelle Andrews isn't supposed to be here. She isn't supposed to be a freshman at Hartford Community College, she isn't supposed to be living at home and working at her dad’s failing bakery, and she definitely isn't supposed to be taking Intro to Electronic Music Production, a class that will get her nowhere toward her goal of an English Lit Ph.D. by age twenty-five. But when her dad’s latest business fiasco eats up her college fund, Hartford Community College is exactly where Isabelle finds herself—and thanks to her late enrollment, she doesn't even get to choose her classes. Stuck with Electronic Music and way-too-easy English courses, Isabelle is determined to wallow in all the misery she feels entitled to.

But community college brings some unexpected benefits…like the fact that a certain overworked, over-scheduled Electronic Music professor hands over most of his duties to his teaching assistant. His tall, green-eyed, absolutely gorgeous teaching assistant. When TA Evan Strauss discovers Isabelle’s apathy toward electronic music—and, well, all music—he makes it his mission to convert her. The music Evan composes stirs something inside Isabelle, but she can’t get involved—after all, she’ll be transferring out as soon as possible.

Still, no matter how tightly Isabelle holds on to her misery, she finds it slipping away in the wake of all Hartford Community offers: new friendships, a surprisingly cool poetry professor, and most of all, Evan. But Evan’s dream of owning his own music studio is as impractical as Isabelle’s dad’s bakery, and when Evan makes a terrible decision, everything Isabelle has gained threatens to unravel. Soon Isabelle discovers that some of the most important lessons take place outside the classroom…and that in life, as in Evan’s favorite Depeche Mode song, the most precious things can be the hardest to hold on to.

Precious Things Playlist

Precious Things features a lot of Depeche Mode songs in the story, and while most of them are named in the novel, a few are not, so I thought it might be helpful to put together an official Precious Things playlist!  I also have to admit that I am not much of a Depeche Mode fan—I really only started to listen to their music while I was thinking about this book, mulling over the idea of a story set around an electronic music production class.  (Like Isabelle, I also took an electronic music class at a community college; however, I was already a college graduate at the time and the class wasn't for credit.)   Also like Isabelle, there are a lot of Depeche Mode songs I don’t like, but I have found a few that I really love, and the mood and tone of them had a huge influence on the writing of Precious Things.  So here are the songs, in the order they appear in the book:

1. “Enjoy the Silence”—For the record, I hate this song almost as much as Isabelle does.  It’s one of Depeche Mode’s earlier hits.

2. “Waiting for the Night”—This is the song Isabelle listens to after reading the Robert Frost poem “Acquainted with the Night,” and the combined effect of the song and poem prompts an unexpected emotional reaction.

3. “I Want It All”—Evan plays this song for Isabelle the first time they’re alone together.  In other words, the almost-kiss sexual-tension song.

4. “Halo”—The soundtrack to Evan and Isabelle’s first date.  The “girl with a famine in her heart” song.

5. “Goodnight Lovers”—This song foreshadows some of the troubles Isabelle and Evan will face in the last part of the book.

6. “Precious”—This one is my favorite too.

And if you want more Depeche Mode, here are some other songs that inspired me, but didn't make it into the book: “Ghost,” “Useless,” “Stripped,” “One Caress,” “Suffer Well,” “The Things You Said,” and “Shine.”  Happy listening!

Hi everyone! As I've mentioned a few times.. I'm the NA Crush Tourney Advocate for Tristan Knight from the Soul Saver Series. The voting  has JUST started so I wanted to share with you my Advocate post that just went live on NA Alley!

A bit about me - I read as much as I can, I swoon over book boys often and I try my best to let everyone know when I've found a book, character and author they shouldn't miss! Besides reading (Strange to say that, right?) it’s all about family, friends, and probably too much TV and movies, but enough about me, how about we get down to why I’m here today?

I was beyond excited to have been chosen as advocate for one of my FAVORITE lead male characters Tristan Knight from the Soul Saver Series by author Kristie Cook!! For those who know who he is, scroll on down to the bottom of this post and hit the VOTE FOR TRISTAN button. And those of you who haven’t found this amazing character yet, read on, you have NO idea what you've been missing.

How about some info to give you a good picture of the man himself? "6'3", panty-melting body harnessing every power his creators could give him, he's the most dangerous creature on earth. And he'll literally give you his heart. What more could you ask for in a book boyfriend?" I know right?

Some physical features to help round out this beautiful warrior

Sandy brown hair, hazel eyes with a wide band of emerald and gold sparkles.

"It wasn't right for a guy to be so incredibly attractive. Besides how tall he stood—towering at least a foot over my five-two—I noticed his hazel eyes first. They pulled me into their staggering beauty, with a wide ring of emerald green on the outside of the irises and brown around the pupils with gold specks that seemed to . . . sparkle. They were fringed with such long, dark lashes that it was unfair they were on a guy. His facial features were flawless—a square jaw, full lips and a golden suntan—better than any movie star or model. Sandy brown hair, longer on top and streaked by the sun, topped off his perfection. And then he smiled magnificently and the gold flecks in his eyes sparkled brighter, like when the sun hits gold flakes in a mining pan." - (Promise)

He's not all brawn, but he has brains, too. He speaks 7 languages, is a math guru and an amazing artist - he brings those together with his interest in architecture. He even designed his own home.

“I’m Tristan . . . in case you didn't catch it.” - (Promise)

I have proof that he's beautiful on the inside too.

He’s fiercely protective of those he cares about and loves –

“I’ll fight for you until the end of my days.” - (Promise)

He’s sexy and flirtatious –

“I showed you mine. Will you show me yours?” - (Promise)

He’s utterly romantic –

"Without your love, without you in my life, I am nothing but darkness.” – (Promise)

He knows how to love as fierce as he fights –

"I will take care of you, honor and protect you, for as long as I live, into eternity. I lay down my life for you, Alexis, my friend and my love. Today I give to you, me.” – (Promise)

Prepare to swoon ladies -

“I couldn't wait for people to see you in that dress. Because you are with me. Forever.” He leaned closer, his lips tickling my ear. “At least let me enjoy it now, because I will have you out of that dress soon enough.” - (Promise)

The thing about this ultimate alpha male is that with all the amazing things about him, he also a motorcycle riding bad boy that lurks just underneath the surface. Tender when he needs to be to all who are in need and watch out for his temper to all who hurt anyone in need or who can't defend themselves.

What more could any person want when it comes to a swoon-able book boy? Well, there’s more so keep reading.

Tristan was created to be the perfect warrior. He’s survived more than most could, he’s changed and he has literally cut out a part of his heart to give to the one that he loves.

It’s his loyalty, commitment, love, strength, inside and out that gives the x factor of book crush characters.

Now, don’t just take my word for it, check out the video below for some of his long time fans -

See! I told you guys!

But wait... there's still MORE about Tristan that I have to tell you about AND SHOW YOU!!!

Tristan can be a bit on the dark and mysterious side. Watching the Trailer for Promise, the first book in the Soul Saver Series (Pssst! The eBook is free on ALL platforms right now!) you'll be able to find out more about him and the beginning of his journey. Take a look, I mean wow... SEXY!!!

These are just some of the things I love about Tristan. And I hope after reading this post, watching the videos that you'll vote for him so he makes it onto the second round!!!

And WHEN he makes it into ROUND TWO... we'll ALL get some more to swoon about! Check out what we'll win, when HE WINS! Right from Kristie herself -

"For each round he wins, Kristie has some special scenes written from Tristan's POV, and if he wins the whole thing – she'll let Tristan tell the story of their wedding night."

And here's some parting words from the man himself....

“Well . . . I didn't get to say a proper good-bye and I couldn't sleep without this.” He bent over and brushed his lips across mine. Then he smiled and winked. I stared at him, dazed. “Okay, better. I can sleep now. Good night.” (Promise)

Synopsis: Born and bred to win, Cami’s family expects her to join a secret society called The Guard, marry one of the two identical twin boys next door, and stay on Pinhold Island for the rest of her life. Home to perfect waves, black sand beaches, and the world-famous Surf Carnival, Pinhold seems deceptively perfect. While visitors are jealous of the few hundred people who get to live there, Cami feels stifled. Thanks to the intense link she shares with her own twin, Mica, she can't even be alone with her thoughts. While Cami's more than happy to be a lifeguard, a lifelong commitment to the endless summer feels like a trap.

As decendents of the ten families who originally settled on the Island, Cami and Mica are part of a new generation, the most perfect example of what nature and time can create. This summer was their time to prove that the years of training have paid off, but it's not going as planned. It's suddenly impossible for Cami to resist the magnetic attraction between her and Blake, one of the twins next door. Just as the Surf Carnival competition starts to heat up, the best swimmers start going down. Something is pulling them to the ocean floor where they wind up in comas and can't be woken up. When Mica goes down too, Cami can no longer wait for those in charge to figure out how to help him.

With her twin link silenced, the clicks that she used to get from her brother start coming from somewhere else. Can she trust her instincts and learn to listen in enough time to save her friends, or will she lose them along with her island home?

Synopsis: 1,135,789. That’s how many subscribers sixteen-year-old West Ryder has on his web vlog series. But he only has eyes for one of them.

As one of the internet’s most prestigious video bloggers, West talks about high school relationships under the name “Sam Green.” As far as he knows, no one from school, not even his best friend, Cat, has seen his videos. But the highlight of the whole thing is Harper Knight, who comments every day at exactly 2:02 in the afternoon. He doesn't know anything about her aside from the occasional deep philosophical messaging on why pizza tastes so delicious, but as stupid as it sounds, he might be falling for her. So when they finally agree to meet in real life, West’s hope for romance seems more and more in reach. But that all changes as soon as he arrives at their meeting spot and sees Cat walking toward him, wearing the same “I <3 Sam Green” T-shirt Harper promised she'd have on.

To his alarm, West realizes he is falling in love with the best friend who has always been a sister to him.

Review: 4 Stars - Debut author L.M. Augustine’s, Click to Subscribe is a fabulous story about two best friends and what happens when relationships and emotions change.

Our main character West has a vlog and it’s through his web series that he has a chance to get away from everyday life at home and a father he doesn't get along with. Their relationship is extremely rocky and it’s the vlog and his best friend Cat that help him find the better things in life.

West and one of his viewers, Harper become fast friends and the two have a fun easy going relationship. Her messages are something he looks forward to everyday. It’s her emails and then chatting to her that West can’t wait to get home to. I think that this was the best part of the story. Well, one of the best parts at least. The two have these quirky and, as the synopsis says, deep conversations that you could never guess what these two would find themselves talking about next.

Cat and West have a pretty great relationship. I found myself laughing a few times at everything from the way they would eat ice cream to the dumb little things they’d say to each other. I often wondered how West didn't see that Cat and Harper were the same person! In ways the two were very similar, yet since Harper was hidden behind a computer screen it was easier for Cat to be somewhat freer with her relationship with West.

When the cat (no pun intended) came out of the bag, West changed from the shock of feeling like it had been a joke at his expense. But then again he didn't because he seemed pretty normal to me when it comes to a teenage guy. So, not seeing things and his reactions when it’s Cat who walks in the door instead of Harper… well, he didn't handle any of those revelations all too well.

West is dealing with a lot. He was before the issues with Harper/Cat came up and while the story is about falling in love with your best friend there was more because of his home life and his relationship with his father. I was happy that Augustine delved deeper into this relationship because it’s often times in YA titles that we don’t get to see any growth or change in a characters family life. With West, we saw the bad and then the road to possible good. It’s horrible what he had to go through and I think he handled it how most would have, teenager or not.

Augustine takes a male protagonist and makes him into a real teenager. It’s not often that a male character is true to his age and West is without a doubt a typical high school teen. I have to commend Augustine – major props to you!

All in all, this debut was a fantastic Contemporary story and just what I was looking for! I loved reading a male lead character and having that chance to see things from a boys point of view rather than a female. It was a welcomed change. I highly recommend this book for fans of YA, fans of Contemps and fans of great stories with solid characters. Keep an eye on Augustine in the future, as I’m sure we’ll be seeing more from this awesome new author. Happy reading.
